6-7 (also written 67 or six-seven) has no fixed meaning. It is a nonsense phrase that spread from a rap song and a pile of basketball clips in 2025, and kids now use it as a reply, a punchline or just a noise. When a dictionary calls it hard to define, that is not the dictionary being lazy. That is the joke.
The slightly awkward part is that this meaningless thing is also the most searched slang term of 2026 so far. So here is what is actually known about it, what is only rumor, and why a number can get banned from a classroom.
Where does 6-7 come from?
The phrase traces back to “Doot Doot (6 7),” a drill rap song by the American rapper Skrilla. It first circulated in December 2024 and had its official release on February 7, 2025, according to Wikipedia’s entry on the meme.
Skrilla has said he never put an actual meaning on it and would not want to. That quote matters, because it kills the tidy origin stories before they start. People have proposed 67th Street in Philadelphia or Chicago, and one linguist suggested “10-67,” which may be a Philadelphia police code for notifying officers of a death. Those are guesses, and the sources cited here do not confirm any of them. The artist himself is shrugging.
Compare that with something like 10-4, a number code that commonly means “message received” on the radio. 6-7 is the opposite kind of number: all sound, no code.
Why do kids say 6-7 and what does basketball have to do with it?
The song spread mainly through video edits of pro basketball players, especially LaMelo Ball, who is listed at 6 feet 7 inches. That height is the link most often pointed to, though Skrilla himself says the number was never meant to mean anything.
Two moments gave the phrase a face. Some weeks after the song’s December 2024 release, an Overtime Elite player said “six, seven” when asked to rate a Starbucks drink, and the clip took off. Then on March 31, 2025, a YouTuber posted a video of a boy yelling the number at a basketball game with an excited hand gesture. The boy became known as the “67 Kid.” Dictionary.com’s own write-up mentions the viral TikToks with basketball players and the 67 Kid but does not name any player.
What does the 6-7 hand gesture mean?
Both palms face up and move alternately up and down, like someone weighing two options on a scale. Dictionary.com says some people read the phrase as “so-so” or “maybe this, maybe that,” especially with that gesture attached, and that younger users also deploy it as an answer to almost any question.
That is as close to a definition as you will get, and even that is a reading, not a rule. A kid who shouts 6-7 after someone says “what time is it” is not telling you the time is middling. They are doing the bit.
Is 6-7 a real word?
It is real enough that Dictionary.com named “67” its 2025 Word of the Year in late October 2025. The site notes it can be written as 6 7, 6-7 or six-seven, and that you should never say it as “sixty-seven.” Searches for it rose more than sixfold from June onward, which is the sort of curve that gets a dictionary’s attention.
Merriam-Webster defines it, as Wikipedia reports, as a nonsensical expression connected to a song and a basketball player. The Swedish Institute for Language and Folklore put “six seven” on its 2025 list of new words and also called it nonsensical. When Dictionary.com, Merriam-Webster and a Swedish language institute all file a word and none of them can pin down what it means, you are looking at a word whose whole function is social.
Interest has not faded. A Word Unscrambler analysis of Google search trends from January to the end of August 2026, reported by NewsNation, put 6-7 at number one with more than 1.6 million queries. The rest of that list is worth a look in our guide to the most searched slang words of 2026.
Why did schools ban 6-7?
Because it works too well as a classroom disruption. Some schools banned the phrase after it kept interrupting lessons, and the gesture went with it. In November 2025 the UK prime minister, Keir Starmer, joined schoolchildren in the gesture during a school visit at a school where it had been banned, and he later apologized to the headteacher.
How do you use 6-7 without sounding off?
My view: if you have to ask, you probably should not. The joke tends to die when an adult explains it earnestly.
If you do use it, use it the way the people who invented the bit do. Say it out loud as “six, seven.” Pair it with the up-and-down palms. Drop it as a reply to something that is neither good nor bad, or as a pure exclamation, and do not expect anyone to ask what you meant. The surest way to misuse it is to give it a meaning.
