The most searched slang term of 2026 so far is 6-7, followed by chud and rizz. The ranking comes from an analysis of Google search trends for January through August 2026 by Word Unscrambler, as reported by NewsNation; Euronews reports the same study and spells the company “Unscramblerer”. Below is the full top ten, what each word means, and where the two reports disagree.
One warning before the list: a word being searched a lot is not the same as a word being used a lot. These are the terms people were confused enough to look up.
What are the most searched slang words of 2026?
NewsNation’s version of the ranking runs: 6-7, chud, rizz, gooning, cap (and no cap), mogging, bop, larping, aura, sigma. Euronews, writing on September 28, 2026, lists the same top three, then cap, mogging, bop, larping, aura and sigma in the same order, but puts crash out at number ten and leaves gooning off. The two lists share nine of ten terms. Treat the top three as solid and the rest as a cluster rather than a strict order.
Where does this ranking come from?
Two news reports of the same study are not independent confirmation, and we have not checked its method. Both outlets point to the same study: a look at Google Search trends from January to the end of August 2026 (NewsNation calls the company Word Unscrambler; Euronews spells it Unscramblerer). NewsNation reports that 6-7 drew more than 1.6 million queries. It gives no volumes for the others, and neither do we.
Two things worth keeping in mind. First, it is search interest, so a word with a confusing meaning (6-7, which does not have one) may draw extra searches compared with a word everybody already understands. Second, this is a snapshot that ends in August. By the time you read this, the ranking may have changed.
What do 6-7, chud and rizz mean?
6-7 is a nonsense phrase that began with a rap song and spread through basketball clips; NewsNation describes it as a term that “doesn’t really mean anything,” usually said with a hand gesture weighing two options. We have a full explainer on what 6-7 means and where it came from.
Chud comes from a 1984 horror movie and is now an insult. Euronews says it means someone stupid, ugly or repulsive, and that left-wing users have adopted it to mock right-wing trolls. NewsNation says kids use it to mean “loser.” The nuance is in our chud meaning guide.
Rizz is short for charisma. Someone with rizz is charming, smooth or good at flirting. Euronews adds that it gets overused by pick-up artists; it describes the plain meaning as a natural sense of charisma or flirting prowess.
What do cap, no cap, mogging and bop mean?
Cap means a lie or a big exaggeration, so “cap!” is a way of saying “I do not believe you.” No cap is the opposite: truthfully, for real.
Mogging (also mog, mogged and framemog) means outshining or outperforming someone. NewsNation defines “framemog” as making someone look smaller by standing next to them with a bigger, more muscular build. Our mogging meaning page goes deeper.
Bop is also a familiar word for a catchy song. NewsNation quotes Merriam-Webster calling its current slang use “offensive, hurtful, and often misogynistic,” and Euronews calls it “a derogatory insult” and a misogynistic one. As slang it is used to shame women, which is why it is a word to recognize, not one to use.
What do larping, aura and sigma mean?
Larping comes from LARP, live-action role-playing, the dress-up fantasy game. As slang it is an online put-down for someone pretending to be something they are not.
Aura is coolness. Aura points are an imaginary score for cool or uncool moves, and aura farming is deliberately trying to look cool to collect them, which Euronews calls the more pejorative form. The history, including the boat-racing kid from Indonesia, is in our aura farming explainer.
Sigma is the Greek letter, and in slang it describes someone coolly self-assured, independent and driven, a lone wolf rather than an alpha. Euronews traces it to the manosphere, where a sigma is seen as sitting above the “alpha male.” As with most of these, it is used sincerely by some people and ironically by others.
What about gooning and crash out?
These are the two where the reports disagree, so here is each one briefly. NewsNation includes gooning and gives its mild meaning as getting lost in or fully absorbed by an activity, while noting that the origins are adult-oriented. We will stay with the mild meaning and leave it there. Euronews includes crash out instead, which means having a breakdown, an emotional low point or a tantrum, as in “he crashed out after the loss.”
