How to Write a Check

by Alex Questly

The short answer: Write the date, payee, amount, memo, and signature in the right spots so the check can be processed correctly.

It looks old-school, but people still search for this because they need a quick, clear reminder of the order and the parts.

Quick Notes

  • Write today’s date in the top right.
  • Write the person or business name on the payee line.
  • Write the amount in numbers and words so it is easier to read and less likely to be disputed.
  • Use the memo line if you want to note what the payment was for.
  • Sign the check at the bottom right.

Examples

  • A rent payment check can include the month in the memo line.
  • A school or household check can include the invoice number or purpose.

Always make sure the written amount matches the numeric amount.

If the goal is just to remember the order, date-payee-amount-memo-signature is the simple version.
