The nth root of x is the number r such that r^n = x. Formula: nth root of x = x^(1/n). For square roots, √x = x^(1/2).
To find the side length of a square with an area of 144 square metres, calculate √144. The result is 12 metres because 12 × 12 = 144.
Not within the real numbers. In complex numbers, √(-x) = i√x, where i is defined by i^2 = -1.
The calculator normally returns the principal root. For example, √25 returns 5, although both 5 and -5 solve the equation x^2 = 25.
