A power is written as b^n. For a positive integer n, b^n means multiplying b by itself n times. Also, b^0 = 1 when b is not zero, b^(-n) = 1/b^n, and b^(1/n) is the nth root of b.
For a savings amount growing by 5 percent per year for 8 years, calculate 1000 × 1.05^8. Since 1.05^8 is about 1.47746, the balance is about $1,477.46.
A negative exponent takes the reciprocal of the corresponding positive power. For example, 2^(-3) = 1/2^3 = 1/8.
Any nonzero number raised to zero equals 1. The expression 0^0 is generally treated as undefined or indeterminate, depending on context.
