Choose a shape, enter the requested dimensions using the same unit, and calculate. The result uses square units, such as square feet, square meters, or square centimeters.
Rectangle area = length × width. Square area = side × side. Triangle area = base × height ÷ 2. Circle area = pi × radius².
A rectangular room measuring 12 feet by 10 feet has an area of 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. That is the floor area before adding any allowance for cuts or waste.
Convert every measurement to one unit first. For example, 6 inches is 0.5 feet, and mixing it directly with feet will give a quietly terrible result.
Area counts how many unit-sized squares cover a surface. Multiplying two lengths produces units squared, such as feet × feet = square feet.
