Why is it Called Pickleball?

by Watson Factius

Pickleball is a sport that is similar to tennis, however, it is played with a paddle and a small plastic ball. The game was invented in the 1960s and gets its style from the fact that it was created by combining elements of other sports, such as badminton, ping-pong, and tennis.

So, where did pickleball get its name? Well, one theory goes is the creators of pickleball, husband and wife Joel and Joan Pritchard had a lovely little dog named, you guessed it, Pickles!

Another rumor says Joan thought the sport reminded her of a pickle boat in crew (rowing) where team members where chosen from the extras on other boat teams.
