BMI Calculator

This calculator estimates Body Mass Index and weight status for adults who want a quick height-to-weight screening measure.

The interactive bmi calculator loads right here. If it hasn't appeared, refresh the page.

Enter your weight and height, making sure the selected units match your measurements. The calculator returns your BMI and the standard adult weight-status range associated with it.

For metric measurements, the formula is: BMI = weight in kilograms / (height in meters × height in meters). For US measurements, it is: BMI = 703 × weight in pounds / (height in inches × height in inches).

Worked example

An adult who weighs 75 kg and is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 75 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 24.49. Rounded to one decimal place, the BMI is 24.5, which falls within the standard healthy-weight range for adults.

Common questions

What BMI is considered healthy?

For most adults, a BMI from 18.5 through 24.9 is classified as healthy weight. The usual categories are screening ranges and do not account for every person's build or medical history.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

BMI can classify muscular people as overweight because it does not distinguish muscle from body fat. It can still provide context, but waist measurements, body composition, and professional medical advice may be more informative.
